Creative Healing for Urban Members Program

The Creative Healing for Urban Members(CHUMS) Programs are designed to ensure that individuals and families are strengthened through the process of teachings that reflect both the cultural and cross-cultural issues that relate to contemporary living. Although issues will be addressed according to family needs, the primary focus of teaching will be directed to identifying strengths that assist in developing stronger coping mechanisms necessary in overcoming circumstances of urban living and in life in general. The Medicine Wheel and Tipi Teachings are the foundation of all the CH

STC Urban Labour Force Development Strategy

Mandate and Description of Program

The objective of the Labour force development program is to provide the necessary planning, training and support to individuals for the purpose of obtaining sustainable employment. This program is made possible through the Federal Government Aboriginal Human Resources Development Strategy.

Specific Services Available
Currently the STC Urban Labour Force Development Strategy encompasses the following six (6) Labour market programs:

Elders Program

Mandate and Description of Program
STC Urban Family Services accesses highly respected Elders from within the community and are available on specified days of the week. Elders work directly within the Traditional Native Parenting CHUMS program and with their wealth of information, knowledge, wisdom, love and guidance are offered to the families.

Specific Services Available

  • Availability of Elders are:
  • Tuesdays – Female Elder
  • Thursdays – Female Elder

STC Urban Safe House

Mandate and Description of Program

The Safe House is a safe place for children and youth who have been or at risk of being sexually exploited on the street. For youth that have no safe place to go and in need of shelter. The Safe House has five beds, offers youth 16 years of age or younger, a safe place to stay from one house up to one month. The Safe House is open 24 hours, 7days a week, three hundred & sixty five days a year.

STC Urban First Nations Inc. Justice Program

Mandate and Description of Program

PALS PROGRAM (Providers of Aboriginal Lifestyles Supports)

In existence since November 1996, The Providers of Aboriginal Lifestyles Supports(PALS) Program has four home visitors who offer in-home support to help families stay together and to achieve a healthy lifestyle. PALS workers help families deal with various issues they may face by providing individual, family counseling and Elder supports. PALS workers also act as an advocate/liaison and network between families with community agencies to reduce isolation.

CHUMS PROGRAM (Creative Healing for Urban Members)

First Nations Early Education Program

Mandate and Description of Program

The program is designed for preschool children and their parents to learn about First Nations Cultures through early education. The programming is delivered in partnership with Wanuskewin.

Specific Services Available

  • A twelve week program held every Friday
  • Transportation provided
  • Traditional parenting
  • Talking/Sharing circles
  • Home visitations

KidsFirst Program

KidsFirst is a free, voluntary program that helps families to become the best parents they can be and to have the healthiest children possible. KidsFirst families receive support from a home visitor who will provide assistance concerning child development, parenting and connecting to the community. Home visitors help families to access services including early learning, childcare and transportation. Families enrolled in the KidsFirst program receive at least one home visit per week.
