Community Justice
Mandate and Description of Program
The Saskatoon Tribal Council Inc. Community Justice Program support Restorative Justice Initiatives at the community based level for six of its seven member First Nations. The Community Justice program specifically offers a chance for the accused to make amends to the victim, community and/or to those who have been affected by certain crime through a restorative justice approach. It offers a chance for the victim to be heard and ask any questions that will allow for the healing process to begin.
Specific Services Available
- Circles, a process for the accused and victim to work out an understanding that satisfies both using the community members in a helping role.
- Victim-offender mediation, victim and accused meet with a trained mediator who assists in resolving conflict. A surrogate victim may be used if real victim is unable or unwilling to participate.
- Diversion, in which offenders are referred to counselling, educational programs, addictions treatment or other programs that may assist in dealing with personal issue.
