Aboriginal Headstart Program
The Aboriginal Headstart (AHS) Program goal is to help aboriginal families become stronger, healthier and empowered to engage in the life long learning of their children through preschool, parent groups and home visits. AHS incorporates the six Best Practice components of Culture/Language, Parental Involvement, Nutrition, Heath/Safety, Social Supports and Education.
The preschool curriculum is formulated around First Nations Traditions and Culture. It incorporates field trips, guest speakers, and daily smudges. Transportation and snacks are provided. The goal is to give the children and early head start to lifelong learning. Priority for entrance is given to those children with the greatest need. Programming includes: four year old classes - Monday to Thursday am and pm, three year old classes – Friday am and pm.
In addition to the preschool program, the AHS program also has a home visitation component. AHS Home Visitors make a minimum of two monthly visits to every program participants home. Parent groups are held periodically throughout the year.
