THE POSITION

STC Health & Family Services Inc. is an organization that provides support and advisory services to its’ seven member First Nations Communities.  We seek a motivated individual to provide Environmental Health Officer (EHO) services to the 7 STC Member First Nations. The position is under the general supervision of and directly reporting to the Environmental Health Program Manager (EHPM). The EHO implements and maintains a comprehensive program designed to monitor and report on environmental health conditions amongst member First Nations.  The position works with First Nations, the Environmental Health Team, other STC Programs and outside agencies to correct any environmental health conditions that may adversely affect health with the goals of increasing awareness and concern for environmental health conditions amongst member First Nations. 

THE PERSON

We are looking for someone who is outgoing, enthusiastic, self-directed, conscientious and organized. You must have excellent interpersonal and people skills, must embrace the philosophy of serving our communities as a staff member of the Saskatoon Tribal Council and have an interest in the field of environmental health and its importance to individual and community health.

DUTIES RELATED TO PROGRAM DELIVERY

In consultation with the EHPM, the EHO will perform the following duties:

  • Inspect, assess and provide reports with recommendations on the conditions and safety hazards for sewage treatment systems, on-site sewage disposal systems, solid waste disposal facilities, food service/food processing establishments, day cares, schools, institutions, recreational facilities and community events such as Pow Wows and Summer/Winter Games.  Recommendations are based on accepted environmental health regulations/guidelines and in accordance with the comprehensive community environmental health work plan.
  • Identify, analyze and provide preventive or corrective measures/recommendations to deal with environmental contaminants, pest control, health related housing concerns, communicable disease control, transportation of dangerous goods, public events such as Pow Wows, and other environmental health issues of concern.
  • Provide public education sessions including Safe Food Handling and WHMIS and performs other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • The EHO must hold current certification with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors as an Environmental Health Officer/Public Health Inspector;
  • Completion of a Post-Secondary Diploma/Degree in Environmental Health;
  • Directly applicable experience in Environmental Health programming with knowledge of environmental health principles and environmental health systems in rural locations;
  • Experience working with First Nations organizations and familiarity with First Nations culture, history and governance preferred;
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills with an emphasis on collaborative problem solving;
  • Demonstrated skills in PC Software Applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access)
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license;
  • Must provide a current CPIC (Canadian Criminal Records Check).

The salary will be based on qualifications and relevant experience.
