Principal - Nawigizigweyas Education Centre



The Principal is the face of the school and will lead teachers and staff, set goals and ensure students meet their learning objectives. Overseeing Nawigizigweyas Education Centre – Yellow Quill First Nation day-to-day operations means handling disciplinary matters, managing a budget and hiring teachers and other personnel. Logistics, schedules, teacher and staff evaluations, and public relations fall under the purview of school principals. You will need to present reports, documents and other findings related to the management and success of our school on a regular basis. The Principal shall be a position that serves the function of educational and administrative officer of the school in accordance with the policies and regulations of the Education Committee. As such, the Principal may delegate responsibilities for the operation of various segments of the school, but shall be immediately responsible for and accountable to the Director of Operations, YQ Director of Education and ultimately to the Education Committee.

General Responsibilities

The Principal, under the supervision of the Director of Education, shall be responsible for the general organization, administration and supervision of the school, its programs, professional staff and for administrative functions. The principal, will act as part of the liaison between the school and the Education Committee, its officials and, without restricting the generality of the foregoing, the Principal shall:

  • Organize the programs, courses and instruction approved in accordance with the Ministry of Education as approved by the Education Committee;
  • Assign, in consultation with members of staff, the duties of each member of the teaching staff;
  • Prescribe the duties and functions of educational assistants and support staff;
  • Exercise general supervision over the work of all members of staff and directly to the care and maintenance of the school building/facilities;
  • Provide leadership for enhancement of the professional development of staff;
  • Conduct, in co-operation with staff, a continuing program of planning and evaluation with respect to the objectives, curriculum, pedagogy and effectiveness of the instruction program of the school;
  • Define and describe the standards of the school with respect to the duties of students and give such direction to members of staff and to students as may be necessary to maintain the good order, harmony and efficiency of the school;
  • Develop, in co-operation with staff, procedures for preparation of reports to parents or guardians on the progress of students and establish mutually acceptable and beneficial channels for communications between the school and parents of students;
  • Advise and make recommendations to the Director of Education with respect to staffing of the school.


  • Act as manager of the total operation of the school;
  • Assist in the preparation of the budget of expenditures for the school as required by the Education Committee;
  • Keep the Director of Education, Education Committee fully advised as to the conditions and needs of the school, and shall submit copies of time tables, reports on pupil attendance, promotion, and other matters as required;
  • Maintain up-to-date cumulative records;
  • Exercise all reasonable precautions to safeguard the health, safety, and general well-being of all students.

Professional Development

  • Provide professional leadership within the school;
  • Direct, supervise and evaluate the total educational program and personnel in the school;
  • Confer with teachers, observe lessons, initiate programs, and give other such supervisory assistance as may be required to ensure a high standard of teaching in all subjects;
  • Consult with supervisory, supportive and consultative personnel when developing special programs and projects designed to improve the instructional program;
  • Advise the Director of Operations of teacher in-school activity or behavior that is in conflict with the goals and aims of the Education Committee;
  • Ensure that all documentation for special services such as special education and high cost is processed properly.

Human Relations

  • Establish relations with staff, which will contribute to good staff morale and an atmosphere permitting professional and academic growth;
  • Provide for the orientation of new staff and for keeping the staff informed throughout the year of the new policies, regulations and all other developments which have bearing on the instructional program and classroom operation;
  • Assume responsibility for the welfare of the students in the school;
  • Provide liaison with parent(s) or guardians through interviews, visitor’s days, bulletins, parent-teacher groups and in general, maintain a sound public relations program with all community members;
  • Foster an educational system based on First Nation values, culture and practices.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Experience supervising and managing staff as well as developing and managing budgets;
  • Knowledge of Provincial and Yellow Quill First Nations Education;
  • Recognizes and respects all cultural diversity and has knowledge of Aboriginal history, language, traditions, and culture.
  • Clear, concise communications both orally and in writing;
  • Manages self and resources against plans and budgets;
  • Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures;
  • Proficient in the use of computer programs for word processing, databases, spreadsheets and internet


  • Bachelor Degree in Education with a valid Saskatchewan Teacher’s Certificate; asset if you have a Master’s of Education.
  • Must provide a current vulnerable sector check;
  • Must provide a drug screen result if selected for the position;
  • Must provide three current written references with updated resume.
