Students celebrate indigenous languages

Hundreds of students grades 3 to 5 gathered in Saskatoon today to share their Indigenous languages at the “Love Your Language – Speak With Pride” Indigenous Language Celebration.

The event, hosted at E.D. Feehan High School, is an annual partnership event between Saskatoon Public and Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Boards and Saskatoon Tribal Council. Public and Catholic school from the city got to know students from the seven STC community schools through a series of cultural activities.

Sharing traditional knowledge, the theme of this year’s celebration, gave students the opportunity to learn about drumming, storytelling, dance, traditional uses of the buffalo, plants and how to raise a tipi. Poems and songs in Cree, Dakota, Saulteaux and Michif languages were performed. Students also got the chance to meet Journey, STC's new mascot.

The event is designed for students to celebrate their culture through language and to foster the learning of Aboriginal languages in children.
